Seeing the achievement of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana under Har Ghar Ujjwala theme, 1st May is celebrated as Ujjwala Day every year from 1st May 2022 with LPG gas connection to more than nine crore families with the resolve of women empowerment and pollution free future.
Main objective of the scheme
The main objective of the scheme was to provide fuel like LPG for cooking to women from rural and underprivileged families, and to eliminate the harmful effects and impacts on women’s health and environment caused by the use of traditional fuel sources like coal dung and wood.
Goal and achievement
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the target was to provide 8 crore LPG gas connections to underprivileged households by the year 2020, but before March 2020, 8 crore LPG gas connections were already distributed seven months earlier. On 7 September 2019 Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi awarded 8 crore LPG gas connection in Aurangabad.
Ujjwala 2.0: Additional allocation of 1.6 crore LPG connections under PMUY scheme with special facility to migrant families. This scheme was launched in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri.

- Candidate ought to be 18 years old.

For Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana the following supporting evidence has to be submitted.
Ration Card issued by the State from which the application is being
made/other State Govt. Document attesting family
composition/self-declaration as per Annexure I (for migrant applicants)- Aadhaar document of beneficiary and adult family members
- Address Proof – Aadhaar will be taken as proof of identity and proof of address if connection is required at the same address.

Assistance under PMUY scheme
The Indian government provides cash assistance for PMUY connections in the amount of Rs. 1600 (Rs. 1150 for a 14.2 kilogram cylinder or a 5 kilogram cylinder for connection).

Frequently asked questions under PMUY
Who are the eligible beneficiaries under Ujjwala 2.0?
- An adult woman from a poor family and without LPG connection in her home will be eligible under Ujjwala 2.0. Beneficiaries
- As per SECC 2011 list should be eligible, belonging to SC/ST families, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), Forest Dwellers, Most Backward Classes (MBC), Tea and Ex-Tea Estate Tribes, People living in River Islands (Beneficiaries will submit supporting documents)
- If she does not fall in the above 2 categories, she can claim to be a beneficiary under poor family by submitting a 14-point declaration (as per prescribed format).
What documents are applicants required to submit for registration?
- Under Ujjwala 2.0 the applicant must provide the following documents:
- POI (Proof of Identity), POA (Proof of Address), Aadhaar copy of applicant, Aadhaar copy of all adult family members mentioned in ration card or similar document, bank account details of applicant
How to apply for LPG connection under Ujjwala 2.0?
- Applicant can apply both online and offline.
- Online – Customer can register through online application or he can also contact his nearest CSC center to submit online application.
- Offline – Customer can register by submitting application directly to distributorship.
Is (eKYC) mandatory for connections registered under Ujjwala 2.0?
- Yes. EKYC is mandatory for connections registered under Ujjwala 2.0 which will be done through biometric or mobile OTP based. Aadhaar authentication is optional only in the states of Assam and Meghalaya.
Can PMUY connection be given to poor families with no female member of adult age?
- No. PMUY connection can be given only in the name of an adult female member of a poor household.
What are the criteria to ensure poor households under Ujjwala 2.0?
- A 14-point declaration submitted by the applicant is the basic criteria for qualifying a poor family under UJJWALA 2.0. Thus, it is mandatory for all applicants.
Which documents can be presented as Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA)?
- For applicants from all states except Assam and Meghalaya, the applicant’s Aadhaar card will be treated as the only Proof of Identity (POI).
- It can also be used as proof of address (POA) if the current address of the applicant is as per his Aadhaar.
- If the applicant’s address is different from that mentioned in Aadhaar card, he can submit any other documents as listed in Annexure-A for POA.
